Lawn Aeration in Georgia

Is your lawn looking patchy, thin, or weak despite regular watering and fertilization? The problem might be soil compaction, a common issue in Georgia’s dense clay soils. At Absolute Green Landscaping, we specialize in lawn aeration services that bring your grass back to life.
What is Lawn Core Aeration?
Lawn aeration is the process of perforating the soil with small holes and the removing cores or plugs of soil to allow air, water, and nutrients to penetrate deep into the root zone. This helps relieve compaction and allows your grass to grow thicker, stronger, and healthier.
Benefits of Lawn Aeration

• Strengthens Your Grass: Grass health is very dependant on root health. Aeration promotes deeper and healthier root growth, which ultimately makes your lawn more resistant to drought and disease.
• Reduces Soil Compaction: Loosens hard-packed soil, allowing roots to spread deeper and more densely.
• Enhances Nutrient Uptake: Helps fertilizers reach the roots more effectively.
• Decreases Thatch Buildup: Removes and helps Break down layers of thatch and organic material. This will promote a denser and more disease-resistant grass.
• Improves Water Infiltration: Georgia clay soils are often so dense that the rain water just runs off of the lawn and into the street instead of making to the grass roots where it is needed. Aeration helps loosen that soil and improve how much water makes it to the root zone. It also provides better soil moisture retention because the soil can hold more water.
When to Aerate Your Lawn in Georgia
I often see lawn companies aerating lawns in February and March but the Ga Department of Agriculture and UGA have confirmed that it is better to wait until the summer and fall to aerate. The best time for lawn aeration in Georgia is during the growing seasons:
• Bermuda, Zoysia, Centipede, and St. Augustine grass should be aerated once the grass has started growing full speed. Usually April – August. This is important because the grass can recover quickly from any damage caused by the heavy aerator as it pulls plugs out of the ground. Also, due to our clay soils in Georgia, the benefits of aeration only last a few months. Ideally, you want the soil loosened before the hotter and more stressful months of the growing season.
• Fescue grass should be aerated and overseeded every fall once temperatures are around 75 degrees. This is usually late September – October. Ideal for fescue and cool-season grasses. This is because fescue thrives in cooler temperatures but it does not like our hot Georgia summers. Normally a significant percentage of fescue will die during the summer. In order to keep fescue from thinning out year to year, it needs to be aerated and overseeded each fall. If you have a lot of moss growing in the lawn, then that should be scraped up before overseeding. Also make sure to water the fescue seedlings for a few minutes about 3 times per day until the seedlings are a couple inches tall. Then slowly taper off the water until you are watering once or twice per week. Your target water amount is about 1 inch of water per week.
